Hey everybody as you all know I'm working on a graphic novel but I also am work on a novel. Please check out the prologue. Its about alot of the stuff going on in the world. Corruption, technolgy, all kinds of cool stuff lol. Please let me know what you think.
Prologue:
Sirens rang through the streets, people screaming echoed from every inch of the city. Although the night blanketed the skyline, it was slowing being dissolved by the lights and fires burning, reaching up.
How did it get to this, the chaos? How could a civilized culture break down so absolutely? Who was to blame for this? Is good intentions the excuse we use to justify being savages?
Down the street a family, with only their most prized possessions in hand flee their home. Frantic they run down the stairs of the stoop not evening closing the door behind them. A cop car slowly pulls up to the sidewalk. “Please everyone remain calm. This is the Elis City Police Department. We are here for your safety.”
The family stops. The older man ushers the small girl behind him. The man hushes his family of four. An officer steps from the vehicle. The man’s wife becomes panicked, she runs. Two shots ring out into the desolate city street. Shutting the door to his cruiser the officer walks over to the man and his two children.
Act. Do something. Damn it, you coward! Do something!
My legs barely allow me to step from the alley. “Excuse me officer?”
As the officer turn to face me with his gun drawn he is tackled by the man. “Roger! Abagail, run!”
I grab the young girls hand. Shes terrified, still staring at her mother’s lifeless corpse. I reach for the teenage boy, but he is already running to help his dad. Three shots kill the man and his son. The girl screams, the officer raises his gun to shoot. Glass from the abandoned store front is blasted into the air as another explosion is set off. “Run!” My brain screams to my legs. I make a mad dash for the alley where just moments ago I was hiding like a rat. I hear the footsteps following close behind. The girl does her best to keep up, but her grip and pace is weakening. With all my strength I propel the girl up and forward into my arms. I took a wrong turn. This mistake is rewarded with a dead end. The door to my left is bolted shut. Ruthlessly I slam my shoulder into the hard wooden door. Again. And again. Finally the door busts of the hinges and I scramble into the darkness.
The empty storeroom is filled with old crates and cob webs. In the shadows I put the girl down, I can’t tell if shes shivering from the cold or from witnessing her entire family murdered before her eyes. “Hi my names, Ben. Your Abagail right?”
She nods.
“Ok, Abby. We’re gonna have to play a very important game of hide and go seek. Ok.”
Another nod.
“Alright. Stay hidden. I’ll be right back. “
As I stand up I feel a tug on my jacket. She looks at me for a second. No words. With just like an old language we’ve long since forgotten she says to me, “Come back.”
“I’ll be right back. I promise.” She lets go. The silhouette of the officer is illumated in the door way. He cocks his gun, solidifying his intent. They say in a situation like this evolution takes over, fight or flight. But they never mention the paralyzing fear one feels. I feel as if my feet have been melted into the floor. It’s so quiet I can hear blood frantically being pushed through my veins. Time seems to slow for a second. My body moves, flowing so quickly through and out of the shadows. The officer is knocked to the ground. I fling myself on top of him, he struggles to aim the gun he still holds in his hand. Stars flood my vision as I’m struck with the butt of the gun. I send my fist blindly into his direction, it connects. The officer drops the gun, but recoils and jabs me in the stomach with his baton. I’m on the ground, again and again he bashes me with the metal rod. I feel the cold hardness of steel under my hand. Those old primal instincts spread to every inch of my body as I raise the gun and pull the trigger. The officer falls back into a pile of boxes. I begin to shake and the gun feels heavy in my hand. I just killed someone. A human being. Not now. There’s no time to feel the guilt you need to get somewhere safe. I slide the gun into the back of my pants. The girl!
I find her right where I left her. Safe. Still shaking. “It’s ok. Come on lets go. We have to get somewhere safe.” Safe? Where is safe? The city’s going to shit. The police are killing anyone they see as “suspicious”. Riots are happening all over the city. I didn’t mean to help cause this. My cause was just. It was wrong what the government was doing to us. To all of us. I thought The Assembly was just a little extreme in their goals to change the system, the government. Their intentions were good, that the ends justified the means. But look what it brought us. Radicals who had their own goals, were they just as corrupt as those they sworn to dismantle. I should have listened to Nina. I just hope that it’s not too late.
OMG CJ!! I was just melted into my screen! This is amazing! Can't wait to see more!
